Whether you call it the Erie Canal or the New York State Barge Canal as it's currently referred to by the state, the reality is that if you can find the time to take a trip on the Canal System you will be enjoying the most underutilized recreational resource in New York State.

Low Bridge --- Everybody Down!!  are lyrics that you might remember from elementary school, and that may be the last recolection that you have of the Erie.  If that's the case you need to take the time to plan a boat trip on the canal.  From May - November it's on a boat that the Canal's truly come alive.

You can use your own boat or rent a fully equipped canal boat and chart your own course.  Marinas provide a full range of services for transient boaters.  Many of the communities along the canal provide docking so you can tie up and explore quiet 19th century towns,

Tour boats also operate on all the Canal Systems waterways.  Cruise for a few hours or a few days,  stopping at quaint inns and waterside restaurants along the way.
